Garmin has officially released a dedicated WhatsApp app in the Connect IQ store. This marks the end of the era of limited notifications—you can now reply to messages directly from your watch.
From Notifications to a Native App: The Evolution
For years, Garmin users relied on system notifications mirrored from their smartphones. While these allowed users to read incoming texts, interaction was heavily restricted, especially within the Apple ecosystem. The shift began in December when beta firmware version 16.11 for the Forerunner 970 and Forerunner 570 hinted at new functionality.
The firmware notes suggested a downloadable app specifically designed to display recent WhatsApp messages. Although the tool wasn’t available in the Connect IQ store at that stage, it was a clear signal of things to come. According to Garmin, WhatsApp has transitioned from a simple alert to a full-featured application designed to deepen the user experience.
Today’s launch of the official version in the Connect IQ Store ends the wait. This is no longer just an overlay on the notification system; it is a standalone program that users can download for free on selected smartwatch models. This move shows Garmin is prioritizing direct communication methods that don’t require reaching for a phone during a workout.
What You Can Actually Do with WhatsApp on Your Watch
The new WhatsApp app offers a much broader range of features than previous system solutions. Users can now not only view recent messages but also actively participate in conversations directly from the wrist. The system displays up to 10 recent messages from your chat history, providing better context for conversations during short training breaks.
Interaction includes the ability to send replies and react with emojis. This is a significant expansion of functionality, which was previously limited to passive reading on many devices. Garmin emphasizes that the app allows users to browse entire conversation threads, making it a much more useful tool for active individuals.
A key element of the new app is incoming call support, though it currently has some limitations. Users can see caller information, but the app only allows you to decline the call. Garmin’s documentation notes that there is currently no option to conduct voice calls directly through the WhatsApp app on the watch. However, this may change as the platform continues to evolve.
iPhones Finally on Level Ground with Android
The biggest winners of this native app rollout are Apple smartphone users. Historically, iOS users were limited by Apple’s closed ecosystem, which prevented them from replying to messages on non-Apple watches. Garmin’s solution helps bridge this technological gap, offering features that were previously reserved primarily for Android users.
While Android users have long enjoyed “canned responses” or keyboards on newer watch models, the introduction of WhatsApp as an official third-party app makes these conveniences available to both platforms. Analysts view this as Garmin’s most significant move toward unifying the user experience regardless of which smartphone a runner carries.
The decision to integrate with Meta’s platform, which boasts over 3 billion active users, is a strategic masterstroke. Rather than forcing everyone into a proprietary communication layer, Garmin chose to collaborate with a global leader. This allows runners and triathletes to stay connected with loved ones using the tools they use every day.
Opening Up to External Players: No More Messenger Favoritism
Until now, the American manufacturer’s communication ambitions focused on its own Garmin Messenger. This was particularly evident in its LTE and satellite connectivity strategies, where messaging and check-ins relied mainly on Garmin’s infrastructure. Even with the launch of the advanced fēnix 8, many voice and text innovations were still rooted in Messenger.
The introduction of WhatsApp changes the narrative, suggesting that Garmin is opening its doors to external partners. This is the first and currently the only third-party messaging app available on the brand’s watches. Experts suggest this move reflects the maturity of the Connect IQ platform, which is now capable of hosting advanced apps from the world’s largest developers.
To use the new feature, Garmin recommends updating both WhatsApp and Garmin Connect to their latest versions. Bluetooth connectivity must be active, and for iOS users, specific access permissions for the WhatsApp app must be granted. These technical requirements ensure the stability and security of transmitted data.
Compatible Garmin Models
The arrival of a native WhatsApp app on Garmin watches is the moment wrist-based communication stops being a mere “extra” and becomes a core feature. It signals that the manufacturer is ready for deeper integration with external services.
Support is available for the following series:
- fēnix Series: fēnix 8 AMOLED (all sizes), fēnix 8 Solar, fēnix 8 Pro, fēnix 8 Dual Power, and fēnix E
- Forerunner Series: Forerunner 970 and Forerunner 570 (42mm and 47mm versions)
- Venu & vívoactive Series: Venu 4 (41mm and 45mm), Venu X1, and vívoactive 6
- Specialty Models: Enduro 3, tactix 8 (AMOLED and Solar), quatix 8 (AMOLED and Pro), D2 Air X15
The End of the Closed Ecosystem?
Garmin spent years building its own communication ecosystem, but this “step to the side” to let in a tech giant marks a turning point. If WhatsApp works, why not other popular apps? The only question remaining is whether Garmin Messenger can survive the competition.
