The organizers of the TCS London Marathon have unveiled the elite field for April 26, 2026, assembling a record-breaking roster of world record holders and Olympic champions. This is arguably the strongest field in marathon history outside of major championships.

Women: A Clash of World Record Holders

Tigst Assefa, the current world record holder in the women’s marathon ($2:15:50$), returns to London to defend her title. The Ethiopian faces an incredibly deep field of rivals, including Sifan Hassan, the Olympic champion from Paris, and Peres Jepchirchir, the reigning world champion. The competition promises to be thrilling, as every medalist from the Paris Olympics and the World Championships in Tokyo is scheduled to compete.

Hellen Obiri will also join the battle, making her London debut following a string of successes in Boston and New York. According to World Athletics, this will be the first time since the 2024 Olympics that Assefa, Hassan, Obiri, and Jepchirchir meet in the same race. Rounding out the elite pack are Joyciline Jepkosgei, last year’s fastest marathoner ($2:14:00$), and the sensational bronze medalist, Julia Paternain of Uruguay.

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, noted that the world record of 2:15:50 could be under threat once again. The field is so deep that it includes numerous athletes with personal bests under the 2:18:00 barrier, making this the most anticipated event on the World Athletics Platinum Label calendar.

Men: Sawe vs. the World’s Best

In the men’s race, Sabastian Sawe faces the challenge of defending his title against seven runners with personal bests under 2:05:00. The Kenyan predicts that the depth of this year’s edition will force the winner to challenge Kelvin Kiptum’s course record of 2:01:25. As of January 2026, Sawe holds the fastest time among active runners in the field at 2:02:05.

Sawe’s primary rival will be Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, the half marathon world record holder ($56:42$) and three-time World Cross Country champion. Joining him is compatriot Joshua Cheptegei, the world record holder at 5,000m and 10,000m, and the reigning Olympic marathon champion, Tamirat Tola.

Beyond the favorites, Amos Kipruto (2022 winner) and Deresa Geleta will be in contention. The European elite will be led by Germany’s Amanal Petros, a World Championship silver medalist. Organizers emphasize that such a balanced and powerful field is a rare occurrence outside of championship events.

British Debuts and Aspirations

The 2026 race will serve as a stage for highly anticipated debuts. Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, the mile world record holder, will attempt the full marathon distance for the first time. He is joined by debutant Hagos Gebrhiwet, an Olympic medalist at 5,000m.

British fans will be watching Emile Cairess (PB 2:06:46) and the long-awaited marathon debut of Eilish McColgan, the European 10km record holder. The British women’s lineup also features Charlotte Purdue, Rose Harvey, and Abbie Donnelly.

The domestic men’s field includes Mahamed Mahamed and Philip Sesemann. Additionally, in the wheelchair race, Marcel Hug will attempt to equal David Weir’s record for the most victories. The event aims to be a celebration of global running, blending world-class professional competition with a massive amateur field.

A Pursuit of History in London

With the world’s most elite marathoners assembled, the 2026 TCS London Marathon offers a legitimate chance to break world and course records. On April 26, fans will witness an unprecedented clash between Olympic champions and track legends, potentially redefining the limits of human endurance.
